TURLOCK — Displaying the killer instinct, Humboldt State put together several late rallies to defeat Cal State Stanislaus, 30-28, 30-28, 30-26 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball match Friday.
With the win, the Lumberjacks improved their record to 8-10 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA. Losing to HSU for the second time this season, Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 5-17 overall and 1-10 in league.
Humboldt State was paced offensively by
Danielle Wells, who finished with 13 kills and a tidy .478 hitting percentage.
Olivia Solomon added 11 kills, and
Kelly Catherina gave the defense a lift with a team-high 26 digs.
"We showed a lot of confidence tonight," HSU interim head coach James Kealalio said. "We've struggled in that same situation near the end of matches this year, but tonight the players didn't let up. They felt like this was their match to win."
In the first game, the Jacks forged a five-point lead that they held until a late surge by the Warriors closed the gap.
Lynsey Adams finished off the comeback hopes by putting away a kill that gave the Jacks a 30-28 win.
CSU Stanislaus edged ahead in the second game, taking a 27-24 lead on Debbi Vander Schaaf's service ace. The Jacks found their form, reeling off six out of the next seven points and finally taking a 30-28 victory on
Mallory Briney's kill.
In the third game, the Warriors held the advantage for most of the game, with HSU finally gained the lead at 18-17 on a kill from
Megahn Berndt. But Cal State Stanislaus was up to the challenge, battling back to take a 26-23 lead.
Again showing their resiliency, Humboldt State put away seven straight points to claim the win in a sweep. Behind Catherina's serve, that included a pair of aces during the decisive stretch, HSU finally ended the match with the 30-26 win.
"Everybody did their part tonight," Kealalio said. "Danielle (Wells) hit well, and Megahn (Berndt) blocked some big balls for us. It was nice to see Kelly (Catherina) put together a string like that and serve out the match."
Humboldt State is back in action Saturday, taking on Chico State at 7 p.m. in Chico.
