CHICO — Battling from wire-to-wire, Humboldt State's defense held up to preserve a 1-0 victory over Chico State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer contest played Friday.
Roland Demombynes scored the contest's lone goal in the 23rd minute of play, helping HSU improve its record to 6-9-1 overall and 2-7-0 in the CCAA. Chico State dropped to 7-9-0 and 4-6-0.
"We've been playing better with every game," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "Having a win to show for it at the end of the day was rewarding."
HSU's goal developed when
Eric Webster took the corner kick, which
Tony Ramirez headed in front of the box. Demombynes gathered it and buried the shot into the net for the game's only score.
"Collectively, this was a very strong performance for us," Cumbo said. "We held tight for 90 minutes and earned the shutout."
The Lumberjacks are back in action Sunday, traveling to face Cal State Stanislaus.
