CHICO — Another strong outing for the young Hunboldt State women's soccer team was unsuccessful, ending in a 3-0 loss to Chico State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game played Friday.
With the win, Chico State avenged a loss to the Lumberjacks sustained earlier this season in Arcata, improving to 10-3-1 and 7-2-1 in league. Humboldt State fell to 3-11-2 and 1-9-0 in the CCAA.
The Lumberjacks fell behind in the ninth minute of play on a defensive breakdown, then were victimized on a penalty kick just 24 seconds before the half. They continued pressing the action throughout the second half, however, but were unrewarded in their efforts.
"We didn't execute our breakaways," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "We had a couple great chances when we got behind their back line, but we couldn't get a shot off. However, we played great overall, and the score really doesn't reflect the way the game went."
The contest was marred by 40 fouls called by officials, who also distributed seven yellow cards. Neither team was able to establish a flow in the tightly-called game.
Humboldt State is back in action Sunday, traveling to Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus in another CCAA battle.
