TURLOCK — After holding the lead for nearly 67 minutes, Humboldt State was unable to finish off Cal State Stanislaus, allowing the Warriors to rally for a 2-1 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Sunday.
With a split on the weekend roadtrip, Humboldt State enters a three-game, season-ending homestand with a 6-10-1 overall record and 2-8-1 mark in league. Cal State Stanislaus improved its record to 4-9-3 overall and 3-6-2 in the CCAA, with two of the wins coming against HSU.
On Sunday,
Trel Mangarin provided the quick strike for Humboldt State, taking a pass from
Jon Eseman and then splitting the defense. The effort provided a one-on-one with CSU Stanislaus goalkeeper Mando Hererra, Mangarin winning the battle to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead just over six minutes in.
Cal State Stanislaus pressed the action, but was unsuccessful against the HSU defense for the remainder of the first half and much of the second. That all changed in the game's final 15 minutes.
The Warriors finally broke their offensive drought when Ross Crown scored his first goal of the season, heading in the shot off a cross from Brice Burtchett. That tied the score at 1-1 at the 73:25 mark.
With less than seven minutes remaining, the Warriors were awarded a free kick, which Kishin Hamaguchi converted to claim the lead and the eventual victory. Twenty seconds later, the Jacks' Zlatan Sahmanovich launched a shot towards the CSUS goal, but the ball sailed high over the crossbar.
