TURLOCK — Humboldt State mounted a fierce late challenge, but came up just short in a 3-2 women's soccer loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday.
Trailing 3-0 with 15 minutes to play, the Lumberjacks scored a pair of goals and kept the pressure on the Warriors. But time expired before they could produce the equalizer, dropping the Jacks to 3-12-2 overall and 1-10-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State Stanislaus improved its record to 9-6-2 overall and 7-2-2 in league, including a pair of victories over the Lumberjacks.
Cherie Early gave the Warriors a comfortable cushion by scoring two goals within a minute and a half in the first half, both coming off assists from Adrienne Sorenson. Melissa Phillips added another goal 10 minutes into the second half, to make the lead appear insurmountable.
Humboldt continued to pressure, however, and was finally rewarded when
Rebekah Chmura took a pass from
Danielle Drucker and put it into the net in the 74th minute. Eleven minutes later,
Anna Erway found
Kim Carroll, who connected to cut the lead to 3-2.
Meghan Connolly and Alison Lawrence both managed shots during the last three minutes of the game, but CSUS keeper Jessica Sitarz stopped the first and the second sailed wide.
Humboldt State returns home for its next three games, starting with Friday's 12:30 p.m. matchup against San Francisco State.
