Jacks travel away down south to face Dixie

ARCATA — An unusual fall schedule finds the Lumberjacks back on the road after playing three straight weekends in Redwood Bowl. This week, Humboldt State travels to St. George, Utah, for the second of two meetings against Dixie State College (2-5). Gametime is scheduled for 6 p.m. PST, or 7 p.m. MT is you're traveling to see it live.

On the Air: As a former Humboldt State football standout and broadcast journalism graduate,  J.B. Mathers brings both his fine-tuned on-air skills and knowledge of the game to all Lumberjack radio broadcasts. He'll handle the play-by-play duties again throughout the fall, with each game aired on Bicoastal Media's ESPN Radio affiliate, KATA, located at 1340 on the AM dial. Joining Mathers in the booth is HSU Hall of Famer Burt Nordstrom, who starred in both football and baseball during his undergraduate career.  …All games are also simulcast on the internet, and can be accessed through a link on the football page of the hsujacks.com web site.  Broadcasts begin 15 minutes prior to scheduled game time with the pregame show, featuring interviews and analysis.

Live Stats: Available again this year through Humboldt State Athletics' web services is the Live Stats feature that allows fans to track the action from their home computers as it happens. New and improved this fall, complete team and individual statistics, along with a play-by-play, are available in real time for all of HSU's home games. A link to the feature is found on the football section of hsujacks.com.

Injury Report: Everyone in Redwood Bowl realized that a serious injury had occurred when sophomore wide receiver Edwin Henry went down in pain Saturday. Torn knee ligaments are the preliminary diagnosis, and Henry is likely lost for the season.

Head-to-Head: Last year's pair of games vs. Dixie were the first two matchups between the squads. Humboldt State prevailed in both, winning 48-28 on the road and 45-7 in Arcata. The Lumberjacks made it three straight, but in more difficult fashion, when they earned a 30-22 overtime win over the Rebels on Sept. 29 in Redwood Bowl.

Lumberjacks Notes: Losing Edwin Henry has a serious impact on a number of the Lumberjacks' plans, including special teams, where he served as primary punt and kickoff returner. In fact, Henry leads the Lumberjacks statistically in punt returns, kickoff returns, receiving and all-purpose yards. “(Henry) is a huge loss for us,” HSU head coach Doug Adkins said. “Along with everything he does on the field, he's also a great person. You really hate to lose him.”…Linebackers Allen Brunner and Brian Iriye continue to carry much of the defensive load for HSU, and are the Jacks' top two tacklers to date. Brunner leads the list with 63 tackles, including six for a loss and thee sacks. Iriye isn't far behind, having accumulated 58 total tackles, 28 of them solos and four for lost yardage. “Brunner and Iriye are carrying us, defensively,” Adkins said. “…Telling a tale of the Jacks' season thus far are those numbers that reflect mistakes. For instance, Humboldt State has been flagged 67 times, 20 more penalties than its opponents. Also, the Jacks are minus 7 in turnovers. …Running back Marcus Cox has stepped up to give the Lumberjacks a solid running game since teammate Cornell Canidate was lost for the season three weeks ago. Over the past three games, Cox has gained nearly 300 yards and is averaging just over 4.0 yards per carry. …Azusa Pacific's successful passing game further exposed the Lumberjacks' problems on defense, an area that Adkins and staff continue to address. “We have to get a pass rush. That's the biggest thing,” Adkins said. “That's No. 1, and obviously, we need our secondary to play better.” …As tough as it was for the Jacks to play four straight road games opening the season, going back on the road after three home contests may actually be beneficial. “It gives us a chance to get away from the pressures and get our act back together,” Adkins said. …Humboldt State departs on he first segment of its long journey at 10:30 Thursday evening, boarding the bus and heading for the Bay Area. The Lumberjacks will fly out of San Francisco early Friday, arriving in Las Vegas later that day. From there, they'll take another bus ride to St. George, Utah.

Rebels Notes:
Since its overtime loss to the Lumberjacks on Sept. 29, Dixie State has only played a single game. The Rebels dropped that contest, losing 38-13 to No. 25 ranked Mesa State. …Humboldt State will need to slow down running back Adam Wells, who rushed for 226 yards against the Jacks in the last meeting. Wells was less successful the following week, managing only 33 yards against Mesa State. …Dixie State is coming off a bye week in the schedule, offering an opportunity to heal some injuries and rest. …Teddy Owens continues to pace the defense, with 53 tackles and 4.5 for a loss this year. …Along with HSU, Western Oregon, Western Washington and Central Washington, Dixie State will be a member of the reformed Great Northwest Athletic Conference in football next year.

Adkins Assessment:
“Having faced Dixie before can be both an advantage and disadvantage. Having faced them, we're more familiar than we are with most opponents, but they know about us, too. They also have revenge on their minds. Other than those factors, not much has changed regarding their strengths and weaknesses or ours.”
