ARCATA – First half goals from
Roland Demombynes and Elliot Richards propelled Humboldt State to a 2-0 win over No. 9 regionally ranked San Francisco State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Friday.
With the win, the Jacks improved to 7-10-1 and 3-8-1 in the CCAA while the Gators dropped to 7-8-2 overall and 4-6-1 in conference.
“This was by far one of our strongest performances of the year,” said head coach Andy Cumbo.
Demombynes got the scoring started 22 minutes with a shot that deflected off the post and rolled across the goal line. The goal was his seventh of the year.
Richards scored 19 minutes later for his second goal of the season after taking a through ball from
Scott Mariani.
The Jacks dominated in the second period, out-shooting the Gators 11-2.
“We were in the same position when we played San Francisco State earlier this season,” said Cumbo. “This time we were able to hold the lead and get the shutout.”
David Bussen was also a bright spot in goal for the Jacks, recording six saves.
The Jacks will be back in action Sunday, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
