ARCATA — Despite ending its long losing streak, Humboldt State was unable to start a winning streak, finishing in a 0-0 tie with San Francisco State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game Friday.
After losing its previous nine games, the result left Humboldt State with a 3-12-3 overall record and 1-10-1 league mark. San Francisco State stands at 6-8-2 and 4-5-2 in the CCAA.
Scattered rain showers, following in the wake of the previous night's heavy storm, slowed the action on the soggy turf. Humboldt State's defense also hindered the Gators, stopping several attacks before they developed.
San Francisco State finished with a 15-12 advantage in shots, with Humboldt State finally closing the gap during the overtime periods. HSU goalkeeper Michela Hernandez stopped nine shots, while her counterpart, SFSU's Emily Hart, made five saves.
One of SFSU's best chances occurred with 17:30 remaining, when Myriah Johnson patiently dribbled into the box, controlling the ball for a left-footed shot from only four meters away. Hernandez came up with the save, however, keeping zeroes on the scoreboard.
Three minutes later, the Lumberjacks put together a solid counterattack, reversing the ball to
Katie Forba, who outraced the defender to the right corner. Forba sent a shot across, but it deflected hard off the side of the post.
Humboldt State managed more offense during the first overtime period, including an opportunity directly in front of the goal that went awry when the player slipped and fell. The Jacks outshot the Gators, 6-2 in the extra 20 minutes.
Humboldt State is back on the field Sunday, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay at 11:30 a.m.
