ARCATA – Two first half goals allowed combined with an offense that never got going led to Humboldt State's downfall in a 3-0 loss to No. 10 regionally ranked Cal State University Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Sunday.
With the loss, the Jacks dropped to 7-11-1 overall and 3-9-1 in the CCAA, while the Otters improved to 8-7-2 and 5-5-2 in the CCAA.
“We have a habit when we play (consecutive games) at home this season of playing well in the first game and then we stall the second game,” said HSU Head Coach Andy Cumbo, referring to the Jacks' win over San Francisco State on Friday.
On Sunday, CSUMB's Kyle Millerick got the scoring started 29 minutes into the game. Jake True collected a loose ball outside the box and fed Millerick, who put it away.
Four minutes later Nate Toricelli collected an Andy Breault corner kick and put the ball into the corner of the goal.
In the 50th minute, the combination of Toricelli and Breault struck again for the third and final goal of the game.
“We came out flat today,” said Cumbo. “We were outworked by Monterey Bay and they made us pay for it.”
Humboldt State finishes out its 2007 season against Sonoma State next Sunday in a game that will be played at Arcata High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
