POMONA — Cal Poly Pomona took advantage of Humboldt State's inconsistency, claiming a 30-17, 30-23, 30-21 volleyball victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match Saturday.

Humboldt State dropped to 8-13 overall and 4-9 following an unsuccessful two-game roadtrip to Southern California. Cal Poly Pomona improved its record to 16-5 overall and 8-4 in conference action.

"We really had an up and down weekend," HSU interim head coach James Kealalio said. "At times we played well, but we couldn't maintain that. We kept faltering when we needed to put together a good stretch of playing."

Leading the Lumberjacks statistically on Saturday were Olivia Solomon with seven kills, Lynsey Adams and Mallory Briney with six kills each, and Danielle Berndt with an impressive total of seven blocks. But the Broncos' duo of Samantha Casey and Jenna Young more than matched HSU offensively, putting away 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

The Lumberjacks stumbled out of the blocks in the opening game, falling behind 10-3 before showing any signs of life. They pulled within four points at 13-9, but the Broncos regained their form, finishing the game on Antoinette Kathol's service ace.

The second and third games were slightly more competitive, but Humboldt State's untimely mistakes helped keep Cal Poly Pomona rallies alive.

Humboldt State is back on the East Gym court this week, beginning a four-match homestand Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m.
