ARCATA — Holding tight on defense, Humboldt State rode a first half lead to 1-0 victory over CSU Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Saturday, snapping a 10-game winless streak.
After earning a scoreless tie against San Francisco State on Friday, the Jacks kept the momentum, improving their record to 4-12-3 overall and 2-10-1 in the CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay dropped to 5-10-2 and 1-10-1 in league play.
Good opportunities were infrequent in the opening half, but Humboldt State made the most of a chance that came at the 40th minute of play.
Katie Forba sent in a free kick from the left side of the box which
Kim Carroll headed over the top of the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks pressed the pace early in the second half, pinning the Otters in their end of the field. But the chances that developed went unrewarded, partly due to the play of CSUMB goalkeeper Stacey Henkle, who finished with six saves.
On the other end of the field, HSU's Hernandez matched her defensively, stopping five shots on goal. For the game, the Otters outshot the Jacks, 17-11, but Humboldt State managed seven shots on goal to five by CSUMB.
Humboldt State finishes its season next Sunday with a home game against Sonoma State.
