ARCATA — Sonoma State staved off a pair of match points to rally for a 28-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-21, 17-15 win over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action Friday.

With the victory, the Seawolves avenged a loss to the Lumberjacks suffered earlier this year,  improving to 7-7 in league games and 11-12 overall. Humboldt State dropped to 8-14 overall and 4-10 in the CCAA heading into Saturday's home match against Cal State Monterey Bay.

"We didn't capitalize on the opportunities that we had," HSU interim head coach James Kealalio said. "We served for game point once, and made an error, and then got to swing for game point and didn't put it away. To be successful, you have to take advantage of the opportunities when they occur."

The Lumberjacks won the first two games Friday before Sonoma State found its form in the next two. Humboldt State held match point twice in the finale, but hurt itself with an attack error before SSU's Sarah Hillier and Kristy Sather sealed the win with consecutive kills.

Sather finished with a match-high 21 kills, while Kaylee Aizenstadt had 17 with a .293 hitting percentage for the Seawolves. Marianne Fox had 12 kills and Taylor Manton come up with 23 digs to pace SSU.

For the Lumberjacks, Lynsey Adams led the way with 14 kills, Megahn Berndt had 13 and Mallory Briney 12 with a .294 hitting percentage. Danielle Wells contributed four block solos and four block assists.
