ARCATA – A season of up and downs for the Humboldt State men's soccer team ended Sunday with a 5-0 loss to No. 11 nationally ranked Sonoma State at Arcata High School.
The Jacks finish the season 7-12-1 overall and 3-10-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Headed for postseason, Sonoma State improved to 17-2-1 and a perfect 14-0 in the CCAA.
“For the most part, I felt like we played well today,” said head coach Andy Cumbo. “Sonoma State was just at another level.”
Steven Browne opened the scoring in the 12th minute for the Seawolves. Nathan Medina struck seven minutes later on picture-perfect bicycle kick inside the penalty area.
Mark Wiedeman and Andrew Bailey added goals in the 31st and 44th minute to put Sonoma up 4-0 at the half.
“Sonoma State was unbelievable in the first half,” said Cumbo.
Sonoma's final goal came on a deflected ball that slipped past HSU keeper
Drew Ryan. Ryan, who came on in the second half, finished with five saves.
Forwards
Jon Eseman,
Trel Mangarin, Keith Lovell, and midfielder
Eric Webster concluded their careers at HSU in the loss.
“Despite this tough loss, the four seniors all had contributions in one way or another today,” said Cumbo.
