Jacks' season ends with last-minute loss to SSU

ARCATA — Learning lessons the hard way has characterized the Humboldt State women's soccer  season, one that ended with a tough 1-0 overtime loss to Sonoma State in a game played at the Arcata High field Sunday.

The young Lumberjacks gained more tough wisdom in the encounter, finding out that even a wire-to-wire effort can end unsuccessfully. Sonoma State's Jacey Davi provided the instruction, taking a pass from Tiffany Chappell and rocketing a shot into the upper left corner of the net with only 48 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

"It's disappointing to lose like this, but the way we played is reflective of how much progress we've made this year," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "We played well enough to win, and it was really anybody's game."

For HSU's lone senior, Elissa White, it was the final game of an outstanding four-year Lumberjack career. She finished in fine fashion, generating three shots, including two on goal, and leading the way with her all-out effort.

"Elissa played one of her best games of the season," Cumbo said. "She did everything possible to try and get us a positive result. She's been a big part of our program and will be missed."

Sonoma State had more offensive opportunities in the game, generating 18 shots on goal to the Lumberjacks' eight. But HSU had better opportunities, including a couple of one-on-one chances, and at least two point-blank shots that sailed past the goal.

HSU goalkeeper Michela Hernandez completed her outstanding freshman season by making 15 saves. Sonoma State's Courtney Grixti came away with seven saves, all but one coming in the second half.

Humboldt State ended its season with a 4-13-3 overall record and 2-11-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Sonoma State improved to 7-10-2 overall and 5-7-2 in league games.
