MONMOUTH, Ore. — If the season was a 10-round boxing bout, the Jacks were already trailing heavily on points as the entered the final round. But they still hoped to avoid the 64-0 final round knockout dealt by Western Oregon in Saturday's season finale.
Down and out, the Jacks generated only two first downs and finished with -5 yards on offense, enduring their third shutout of the season. The campaign ended with a 2-8 record only one year after the program had posted a 9-1 mark, the final game marking the HSU program's worst defeat since a 74-0 defeat to Boise State in 1986.
On the other side of the ball, the Western Oregon Wolves finished their regular season with an 8-2 mark, the best the program has managed since 1985. They're likely to earn a berth in the Rotary Bowl, a postseason game matching the top independent team in the west that doesn't qualify for NCAA post-season action against the highest finishing team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference not going to the playoffs.
On Saturday, the Wolves rolled up 562 yards, led by senior Mark Thorson's 21-of-29 passing performance, good for 236 yards and four touchdowns. Tim Vedder led the rushing attack with 99 yards in eight carries, including a 74-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes left to play. Tyler Wilson was also productive, carrying 24 times for 95 yards.
Thorson and two other WOU quarterbacks successfully employed 12 different receivers, led by Sean Fullerton's four receptions. Brad Ching had three catches for the Wolves, two of them accounting for Western's first two touchdowns.
Humboldt State's five running backs managed only 26 yards rushing between them, 24 of them by
Joevany Cueva, while the quarterbacks endured seven sacks. If the lack of productivity wasn't enough, HSU also hurt itself by giving away four fumbles and two interceptions.
The Lumberjacks' defense was kept on its heels, victimized by the turnovers that provided WOU with good field position all day. Nate Turner led the way with 10 tackles and one fumble recovery, while
Keon Gaither,
Johnny Terrell and
Allen Brunner all managed nine tackles.
