CARSON — Four players achieved double figures in kills in a balanced offensive effort, leading Humboldt State to a 30-22, 25-30, 30-20, 30-24 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the California Collegiate Athletic Association season finale for both squads.
The victory allowed HSU to finish its season with a 10-15 overall mark and 7-14 league record, both reflecting one win more than the Jacks achieved in 2006.
Lynsey Adams paced the offense with 18 kills,
Mallory Briney adding 17,
Olivia Solomon 16 and
Megahn Berndt 11 for the Lumberjacks.
"(Finishing with a win) definitely gives you a better feeling for the season," HSU interim head coach James Kealalio said. "We all think we could have had a better season, and our record doesn't show how well we played. We had some road wins, and we swept the teams behind us, both of which we hadn't done before."
Sophia Lopes and Marissa Anderson both topped the home team with 15 kills each, while Lauren Wells had and Ashley Clark 10. But the Jacks were more effective with their attack, registering a .257 hitting percentage compared to the Toros' .195 mark.
Berndt started the Jacks off quickly putting down five kills in the opening game, and Wells sealed the first game win with two kiills in a 5-2 run that ended it. CSUDH evened the match up with a win in the second game, helped out by eight Lumberjack attack errors.
The third game was tight in the early stages, the Toros edging ahead 10-9 after three consecutive HSU attack errors. But Briney, Solomon and Adams heated up the Jacks' offense, helping HSU score nine of the next 10 points on the way to a 30-20 victory.
Humboldt State pulled ahead again in the fourth game, claiming a 9-4 advantage behind Solomon's serve. They briefly continued to build the lead before CSUDH rallied for five straight points, Anderson's kill forcing HSU to call timeout.
Again, the Lumberjacks pulled ahead before Clark and Anderson helped the Toros pull within four at 26-22. Adams and Solomon checked the momentum with consecutive kills, and an attack and service error by CSUDH ended the game and match in the Jacks' favor.
