ARCATA — While improving in some aspects of the game, the Lumberjacks found out they need to address other areas in a 77-56 win over Southern Oregon on Saturday.
Utilizing a fullcourt press most of the way, and employing every active player, the Jacks forced the Raiders into 23 turnovers. They struggled with their own shooting at times, but overcame those woes with the inside game, led by
Devin Peal's 19 points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Jacks were
Grayson Moyer with 16 points, and WIll Sheufelt and
Nick Green with 11 each. Green's performance, along with that of
Everett Smith and
Efren Del Rio off the bench, were encouraging signs for HSU head coach Tom Wood.
"I liked the fact that our second flight of players stepped up," Wood said. "Nick and Everett and Efren played well. We also had more quality defensive possessions than we did combined the first two games on the road."
HSU started strong, racing out to a 14-0 lead before Southern Oregon's Josh McDermott converted a layup. The Lumberjacks led by as many as 17 points, but lapsed near the end of the half, allowing the Raiders to cut the advantage to 37-25 on Trenton Fraser's layup.
"We were 17 points ahead, then all of a sudden we began playing poorly," Wood said. "We threw the ball away and didn't convert. I was frustrated about how we finished the first half. I think we relaxed."
Fraser finished with 13 points to top the Raiders, Matt Cowell had 12 for Southern Oregon.
Humboldt State takes a break over the Thanksgiving holiday before opening California Collegiate Athletic Association action on the road. The Jacks face Cal State Los Angeles on Friday, Nov. 30, and take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, Dec. 1.
