CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Jacks' rally falls short in five-game loss to UCSD

ARCATA — Rallying from a sizeable deficit to tie the match at two games each, Humboldt State was unable to do the same in the final game in a 30-17, 30-20, 28-30, 23-30, 15-7 loss to UC San Diego in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action Friday.

After winning the first two games easily, UC San Diego led by as many as nine points in the third and appeared to be cruising to an easy match win. But Humboldt State came back, repeatedly feeding outside hitter Olivia Solomon, who contributed three kills down the stretch to lead the Jacks to the 30-28 win.

Humboldt State maintained its momentum through the fourth game, finishing it off with four straight points on Liz Shannon's serve and repeated errors by the Tritons.

In the final game, UC San Diego broke away from a 2-2 tie, with two service aces by Casey WIlson starting a 5-0 run. Wilson finished off the game with a kills to preserve the win, helping the Tritons improve to 17-7 overall and 11-5 in the CCAA.

"It's a heartbreaker to lose, but I'm happy with the resilience we showed in coming back like we did," HSU interim head coach James Kealalio said, after his team dropped to 9-15 overall and 5-11 in league. "A couple of balls in the fifth game changed is, and we lost our edge. But overall, everyone did well tonight."

The loss didn't overshadow a milestone reached by HSU middle blocker Danielle Wells, who achieved a new Lumberjack single season record with 113. She contributed nine block assists and one block solo to the Jacks' efforts Friday.

"Congratulations to Danielle for what she has accomplished," Kealalio said. "She was steady, as always. Her blocking is something we can always count on."

Leading the Tritons' attack was Sylvia Schmidt, who had 18 kills, and Rebecca Bailey, who finished with 14.  Schmidt also contributed six service aces and Wilson had five for UCSDl, which totaled 21 as a team.

Solomon had 16 kills and Mallory Briney 14 for the Jacks, both players achieving a .263 hitting percentage. Liz Shannon had 11 digs to go along with her 44 assists.

Humboldt State finishes the home portion of its season Saturday, hosting Cal State Los Angeles at 7 p.m. Senior players Kelly Catherina, Megahn Berndt and Solomon will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
