ARCATA — In the final home match of the 2007 season, the Humboldt State volleyball team fell to Cal State Los Angeles in four games Saturday, losing 30-27, 30-26, 19-30, 30-27.
The loss dropped HSU to 5-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 9-16 overall while the Golden Eagles improved to 14-9 and 10-6 in league. The Lumberjacks close out the season next Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Before the match departing seniors
Olivia Solomon,
Megahn Berndt and
Kelly Catherina were recognized for their accomplishments. In her final home game, Solomon recorded 13 kills while Berndt contributed seven kills and five block assists. Catherina led the Jacks' defensively with 17 digs.
“Our seniors played well tonight and we wish we could have pulled it out for them in front of the home crowd,” added Kealalio.
The Lumberjacks threatened to put away the opening game, holding a 27-25 edge after a block by Berndt and
Liz Shannon. But the Golden Eagles scored five of the next six points, taking the game on an HSU attack error.
“We came out with intensity and played our relaxed game, but we started tensing up and making mistakes,” said HSU head coach James Kealalio.
Cal State Los Angeles moved up by two before the Jacks rallied to win game three. Behind the serve of Bianca Gorospe, the Golden Eagles finally finished off HSU in a tight game four.
Airess Padda paced Cal State L.A. with 14 kills, while Gorospe added 13 and Ursula Vieira 12 to the effort. Lindsay Laakso had three service aces for the Eagles, who finished with 13 as a team.
Humboldt State received another stellar effort from
Danielle Wells, who became the school's single-season blocking record holder the previous night. On Saturday, Wells added three block solos and eight block assists to her totals, helping HSU outblock CSLA, 16-7
