LOS ANGELES — Starting the league season with a classic encounter, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks men's basketball team prevailed in overtime, earning a 77-72 overtime win over Cal State Los Angeles in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener Friday.
Cy Vandermeer led the way for HSU, scoring 16 points and grabbing an incredible 21 rebounds to help HSU improve to 3-1 overall. The senior post also added two blocked shots and a team-high five assists, including a key dish that
Grayson Moyer finished with a layup to help seal the win in the extra period.
Also in double figures for HSU were
Devin Peal with 15 points, Moyer with 14 and
Will Sheufelt with 11. Louis Hamilton led the Golden Eagles with 17 points and nine rebounds, with Demetrius Hazel and Christofer Hart each contributing 12 points, as the home squad dropped to 2-1.
In the extra period, HSU's defense clamped down on the Golden Eagles, limiting them to five points and only one field goal. On offense, Peal made a nice pass to Moyer who pushed it off the glass for a 71-69 lead with 2:20 to go before Vandemeer hit a free throw to provide a five-point advantage.
The Eagles scored a pair of free throws on the other end before Vandermeer undermined their own comeback hopes, first pulling down an offensive rebound after a HSU miss. After the Jacks wound the clock down, Vandermeer drove past his defender before shoveling a pass to Moyer for a left-handed layin and a five-point lead.
A quick start to the game found the Jacks leading 15-5, most of the damage done inside by Peal on the offensive end. Just as quickly, the Eagles exploded on an 11-0 run, Hazel nailing a pair of threes before a layin by Mark provided the Eagles with a 16-15 lead, their first of the game.
Camper drained a three-pointer to give Cal State Los Angles a 24-19 lead, and Mark's layup following a steal provided the Eagles with a seven-point advantage.
Efren Del Rio answered with a three for HSU, and Vandermeer's putback and free throw pulled the Jacks within one, and the game stayed tight throughout the next five minutes.
HSU turnovers and miscues turned the tide again in the last minute, Cal State Los Angeles scoring the final six points of the half. Hamilton took a pass from Hart, and dunked it home to provide the home team with a 40-33 advantage at the break.
A shooting show in the first five minutes of the second half by both squads favored the Lumberjacks, with three-pointers by
Ernie Spada, Sheufelt, Moyer and Peal helping them reclaim the lead. The Golden Eagles righted themselves, taking a 55-54 lead on a reverse layup by Vincent Camper with just under 12 minutes remaining.
They traded the lead with the Lumberjacks briefly before recapturing momentum with just under seven minutes to play, moving up by five points before the Jacks responded. Coming back again, HSU pulled within one when
Carlos Corral emerged from a tangle of players for a layin with 4:01 remaining.
Again, Cal State L.A. surged ahead on Hamilton's layup on the other end, moving up by five again. But Peal drove the paint for a backet, and Sheufelt stole a pass and penetrated for a left-handed layup that cut the lead to one again.
Wiht 1:40 remaining, Moyer made another steal, this time finding Vandermeer for the basket and a 67-66 lead. But Vincent Camper hit one of two free throws to tie the game with 25 seconds left in regulation, and both teams missed shots down the stretch that could have ended it on time.
