HSU perseveres to capture sweep of roadtrip

CARSON — Trailing for nearly 36 minutes, Humboldt State founds its heart in the final four on Saturday to claim a 77-72 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills and a sweep of its men's basketball league-opening roadtrip.

The win, coupled with Friday's overtime victory over Cal State Los Angeles, improved the Jacks to 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 4-1 overall. Cal State Dominguez Hills suffered its second tough home loss in two days, dropping to 0-2 in league and 2-2 overall.

Cy Vandermeer's bank shot with four minutes, 23 seconds remaining gave HSu its first lead of the game at 66-65, but Jerrel Smith answered for CSUDH by scoring a layup and putting his team back in front with just under three minutes to play. In that final stretch, Grayson Moyer and Devin Peal contributed clutch shots to help the Jacks gain the lead again.

Still, the Jacks only led by one point after the Toros' Jonathan Tolliver drained a three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining. But Will Sheufelt and Ernie Spada finished off the home team's chances by hitting two free throws each.

Peal finished with 17 points to lead four HSU scorers in double figures, also contributing a team-high seven rebounds. Sheufelt had 15 points, Moyer 13 and Spada 10 to round out the Jacks' offensive production.

The Toros, who led by as many as 12 points on two occasions, were led by Tolliver's 11 points, and Rodney Yearby added 10 off the bench.

"Over the recent history of our program, we've always felt like we know how to win," HSU head coach Tom Wood said.  "That's carried over to these guys. They never believed they weren't going to win. Their resolve and character is terrific."

Humboldt suffered from a sluggish start, missing open three-pointers on its first three possessions and allowing the Toros to work their way to a 16-4 lead. Searching for energy, Wood inserted his second five, who responded by edging back within eight when Carlos Corral hit a three-pointer from the top of the key.

Consecutive three-pointers by Moyer and Vandermeer pulled HSU within two points, but Nonso Nibo found his touch on the other end, hitting back-to-back treys of his own to push it to eight again. Peal kissed the ball off the glass to bring Humboldt within reach at 39-33, and missed attempts at both ends of the floor ended the first half.

The Lumberjacks go on the road again this week, taking a break from league play to participate in the Ron Logsdon Classic hosted by Sonoma State. They'll take on Chaminade University on Friday and face Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday in Rohnert Park.
