ROHNERT PARK — Breaking open a tight first half with a 20-2 surge, Humboldt State raced away from Notre Dame de Namur, 79-56 in the opening game of the Ron Logsdon Classic men's basketball tournament on Friday.
With the win, HSU improved to 5-1 while Notre Dame de Namur fell to 2-3 overall. Both teams will be back in action Saturday, Humboldt State taking on Chaminade University and NDNU facing host Sonoma State.
On Friday,
Devin Peal paced the Jacks with 21 points,
Cy Vandermeer had 15 and
Ernie Spada 11 to help HSU move ahead by as many as 27 points.
Will Sheufelt contributed nine points and six assists from the point guard position without committing a turnover.
Chris Clock accounted for most of the Argonauts' offense, scoring 20 points. But most of NDNU's problems were due to the 22 turnovers they committed to only seven by the Lumberjacks.
HSU and NDNU traded leads in the early going, the Argonauts edging ahead 13-9 on Aaron Parker's layup. But the Sheufelt hit a jumper that initiated the decisive run that allowed HSU to gain a 15-point lead with 5 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the half.
They didn't slow down from there, both Vandermeer and Peal doing the damage inside to help HSU keep the Argos on the ropes. By halftime, Humboldt State had gained a 43-25 lead.
