Shooting touch absent in loss to Silverswords

ROHNERT PARK — Shooting woes plagued Humboldt State from start to finish, leading the Lumberjacks to a 77-68 loss to Chaminade University at the Ron Logsdon Classic on Saturday.

The Lumberjacks shot only 35 percent form the field and 28 percent from three-point range in falling to 5-2 overall. Chaminade fared better, hitting 47 percent, but still had to rally from a six-point deficit to improve its record to 2-3.

Stewart Kussler scored 30 points to lead the way for Chaminade, hitting all five of his attempts from beyond the arc. Hayden Heiber had 13 points, while Marko Kolaric and LaMarr Hunt scoring 11 each and Kolaric nabbing 15 rebounds.

HSU was paced by Will Sheufelt's 26-point effort and Devin Peal scored 18, but big man Cy Vandermeer was limited to two points on 1-of-13 shooting from the field. Vandermeer, the Jacks' 6-9 center who earned California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week honors last week, had to go against the Swords' Kolaric, a 7-0 post from Serbia.

HSU struggled out of the blocks, falling behind by as many as 12 points in the opening minutes of the game. But the Silverswords also had a difficult time with shooting accuracy early, allowing the Lumberjacks to climb back into the game.

Again, it was the Jacks' second unit providing the energy to start the comeback, and the starters re-entering to keep it going. The tide completely turned when Peal was fouled while making a layup, hitting the free throw to tie the game at 26-26 with just over two minutes until the break.

Sheufelt's three-pointer put Humboldt State ahead for the first time before Chaminade countered with a pair of free throws that left the Jacks ahead, 29-28 at halftime.

Humboldt State gained its largest advantage early in the second half, moving ahead 39-33 on Sheufelt's three-pointer. The teams traded leads for the next eight minutes, Chaminade eventually taking control on Kussler's layup that provided a seven-point lead with 3:51 remaining. The Swords hit their free throws down the stretch to account for the final margin.

The Lumberjacks take a break for final exams this week before resuming play on Dec. 21 when they host the DeBeni Classic.
