Humboldt holds off Broncos in 73-60 win

ARCATA — (Feb. 1) Behind a game-high 20 points by Katie Wilder, Humboldt State's women's basketball team picked up its third straight win, a 73-60 final over Cal Poly Pomona, Thursday in Arcata.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association win moved the Lumberjacks to 14-4 overall and 9-4 in league play. The Broncos fell to 5-12 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA.

Nine straight points by Jennifer Enos, including a four-point play, gave Humboldt an early 11-6 lead that was later stretched to 20-6 by the 12:20 mark of the first period.

The Broncos made a small run towards the end of the half, cutting the Jacks' lead to five points on a three pointer by Ashley Moody with under two minutes remaining. HSU would take a 36-30 lead into the break.

“(Cal Poly Pomona) battled,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason. “They are a much improved team and we're lucky we got out of it with a win.”

While the Jacks never relinquished their lead in the second half, they never ran away with the game either as the Broncos answered each Lumberjack run with a bucket of their own.

Ally Smith's jumper at the 17:31 mark cut the deficit 40-36 while CPP would cut the Jacks' double-digit lead to single-digits on two other occasions.

“I think every time we opened up the game they would hit a big shot,” said Gleason.

Moody and Smith had 16 points apiece for the Broncos who shot 36 percent from the field and were just 4-for-19 from beyond the arc.

Wilder added eight rebounds, six assists and four steals to her 20 points and committed just one turnover.

“Katie did a great job leading us tonight,” said Gleason of her senior point guard.

Enos added 17 points, including four three-pointers, while Mia Spasowska finished with 13 points and six assists.

Humboldt returns to the court Saturday, hosting Cal State San Bernardino which fell 48-40 to Sonoma State on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in the East Gym.
