CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

HSU races away from Cal Poly Pomona, 84-62

ARCATA — (Feb. 1) Avenging an early season loss, Humboldt State built an early lead and eventually cruised away from Cal Poly Pomona, 84-62 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game Thursday.

Ranked No. 3 in this week's NCAA Division II West Region poll, the Lumberjacks improved to 15-3 overall and 10-3 with the win over the region's No. 2 ranked team. The Broncos dropped to 12-5 and 8-4 in league.

Jeremiah Ward scored a season-high 23 points, hitting 11 of his 15 shots from the field, and was supported by Devin Peal's 21 points and 20 from Grayson Moyer. Kevin Johnson added 10 points for the Jacks, who remained one-half game behind Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA standings.

Dion Cook scored 17 points and Larry Gordon added 13 for Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos missed a chance to sweep the season series, having claimed a 58-55 win over HSU at home on Dec. 2.

The Lumberjacks raced out to a 14-2 lead, hitting six of their first seven shots from the field. Moyer held the hot hand early, scoring 12 points in the opening half as the Jacks built an 18-point lead before the Broncos responded.

Cook helped the Broncos rally before halftime, driving the lane for short jumpers and layups. His 12-footer finished a CPP five-point run, all scored by Cook, to finish the half and trim the Jacks' lead to 41-30.

Cal Poly Pomona trimmed the lead to nine points in the opening minutes of the second half, but that was as close as the Broncos would come. Humboldt State surged ahead, taking a 21-point lead on Johnson's layup with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Also contributing to the Jack's effort was Cy Vandermeer, who grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and blocked two shots, and Will Sheufelt, who dished eight assists. Moyer also had seven assists for the Lumberjacks.

Humboldt State is back on its home floor Saturday, taking on league-leader Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m. The Coyotes scored a 74-52 victory over Sonoma State on Thursday.
