CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

No. 3 Lumberjacks jump past No. 1 Coyotes, 89-78

ARCATA — (Feb. 3) Exploding for 17 straight points to start the second half, Humboldt State kept pace the rest of the way to earn a 89-78 win over Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game played Saturday.

Humboldt State, the region's No. 3 ranked team coming into the weekend, knocked off No. 1 CSU San Bernardino two days after defeating No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona, The win improved HSU to 16-3 overall and 11-3 in the CCAA while the Coyotes fell to 14-=4 and 10-3 in league games.

After trailing by as many 12 points in the first half, the Jacks rallied to take a brief lead when Jeremiah Ward hit a three-pointer. Cal State San Bernardino's Prentice Harris kept the pressure on, however, making five of his six three-point attempts to give the Coyotes a 44-40 lead at the half.

The Lumberjacks came out of the lockerroom firing, starting their run with a jumper by Will Sheufelt and making their first five shots. After missing a three-pointer, they resumed the run, finishing it with a free throw by Devin Peal that gave HSU a 57-44 lead.

"I told them to go out and run 17 straight points," HSU head coach Tom Wood said, joking about his halftime speech. "Honestly, we talked about staying sound and being tough offensively. Our seniors did a good job of providing leadership and direction."

CSUSB put together its own rally, ripping through a 14-2 run that trimmed the Jack's lead to 59-58 with 11 minutes, 51 seconds remaining. But Ward drove for a pair of layups and Grayson Moyer drained a three-pointer  to put the Jacks back on top, and they finished the rest of the game unthreatened.

Ward tied for game-high scoring honors, dropping in 22 points to pace HSU, while Moyer added 18 and Peal had 13 with four steals. Kevin Johnson also contributed 13 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for the Jacks, who shot 62 percent from the field overall and 75 percent in the second half.

Harris, who had 17 points at halftime, finished with 22 to lead the Coyotes. Gregg Williams came off the bench to provide 16 points, and Lance Ortiz added 11 for CSUSB.

Humboldt State heads on the road for its next four games, starting with this week's roadtrip to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and UC San Diego on Saturday.
