HSU tops SFSU, falls in championship game to Warriors

TURLOCK — (Feb. 4) No. 14 nationally ranked Cal State Stanislaus broke open a scoreless ballgame with three sixth-inning runs to claim a 3-0 win over No. 4 Humboldt State in the championship game of the Diamond Sports/Togo's Best of the West Softball Tournament in Turlock Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Lumberjacks beat No. 25 San Francisco State 4-1.

Cal State Stanislaus went a perfect 6-0 in the tournament while Humboldt State is now 5-1 on the young season.

“We lost to a good Cal State Stanislaus team,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “They hit the ball hard and they played great defense”

After five scoreless innings, the Warriors opened the top of the sixth with a double, followed by a ground out. CS Stanislaus then smacked three straight RBI hits before Humboldt was able to end the inning with a pop out to first base.

“Their hits were hits,” said Cheek. “They weren't just balls that fell in. (Tracy) Motzny threw a pretty good game. We just had one bad inning.”

Motzny (2-1) had three strikeouts while giving up seven hits, four in the sixth inning.

The Warriors' pitcher Omaira Estremera held the Jacks' at bay, allowing just three hits, two by Nancy Harbeson and one by Megan Sutherland.

In the Lumberjacks' earlier game against San Francisco State, Carolyn Cameron, Francesca West and Marissa Slattery each tallied a pair of hits as HSU scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.

Lizzy Prescott (3-0) recorded 11 strikeouts while scattering five hits and two walks.

The Gators' lone run came on a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.

Galletly, Harbeson, Motzny and Prescott were all named to the all-tournament team.

“Galletly was outstanding on both offense and defense all weekend,” said Cheek of the sophomore first baseman. “We made some great plays throughout the tournament and overall we looked good.”

The Lumberjacks are home on their own HSU Softball Field this week, hosting Western Oregon and Notre Dame de Namur in the Best Western Humboldt Bay Inn Tournament.
