CARSON — (Feb. 9)
Grayson Moyer came up big again, hitting a key three-pointer down the stretch to help Humboldt State hold off Cal State Dominguez Hills, 70-62 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game Friday.
Humboldt State kept its hold on first place in the CCAA, improving to 17-3 overall and 12-3 in league, while Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 8-12 and 5-10.
Moyer scored a team-high 22 points, none more important that the three-pointer that he hit from the corner with two minutes, 18 seconds remaining, that gave the Jacks a seven-point lead. It was also Moyer who
took down the Toros on Jan. 6, hitting a shot at the buzzer that gave HSU a 65-64 win in the East Gym.
Will Sheufelt,
Devin Peal and Moyer all contributed free throws in the final two minutes that helped preserve the victory.
Kevin Johnson finished with 12 points for the Jacks, and Sheufelt and Peal added 10 each to the balanced efffort. Trevon Bryant had 13 to lead the Toros, with Mike Steed and Shamont Brown each scoring 12 points.
Both teams employed a deliberate offense most of the game, working through the shot clock in the quest for an open look at the basket. Cal State Dominguez Hills took its first lead of the game at 8-7 on a putback by Bryant, but the next 15 minutes belonged to the Lumberjacks.
Taking over for Peal and Johnson, who provided the early points inside,
Cy Vandermeer got into the post production, putting up a short half-hook for one basket then drop-stepping for another that put HSU up 15-11,  A Moyer three made 18-11 at just under nine minutes to go before Peal came up with a loose ball and found the streaking Moyer for an easy basket that gave HSU a 20-11 lead.
Strong defense and a patient offense continued to pay dividends for the Jacks, who stretched their run to 15-1, eventually opening up a 17-point lead. Mike Steed helped the Toros mount a short challenge, driving the lane for consecutive layups, but Johnson finished off the first half with a baseline jumper that gave HSU a 37-22 lead at the break.
The Toros scored the first seven points of the second half before Johnson's dunk ended the run. But Cal State Dominguez Hill picked up where it left off, working the deficit down to 39-31 on short jumper in the lane by Brown.
Peal's jumper gave HSU a 49-45 lead, but the Toros wouldn't go away. A minute later, following an HSU turnover, the Toros earned free throws on the other end, and Barnes made one to make it 49-48.
Humboldt State managed to hold off that threat, and a couple more in the waning minutes to earn the win. The Lumberjacks will be back on the court Saturday, continuing the roadtrip with a 7:30 p.m. game at UC San Diego.
