ARCATA — (March 11)
Chrissy Motzny had a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, in one game and two RBI in the nightcap, leading Humboldt State to an 8-0 and 5-0 sweep of CSU Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association softball action Sunday.
The Lumberjacks improve to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in league play. The Otters fall to 8-19 overall and 3-13 in the CCAA.
Humboldt opened play with six runs in the first inning, including the grand slam by Motzny.
Caitlin Klug, who went 2-for-3 in the game, also tallied an RBI, as did
Marissa Slattery.
Motzny's two-run homer in the bottom of the forth gave the Jacks an 8-0 advantage, and after holding the Otters scoreless in the top of the fifth, the game was called due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Lizzy Prescott picked up her ninth win of the season, fanning seven batters and scattering three hits.
In the nightcap, Motzny went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI while
Carolyn Cameron collected three hits as the Jacks shut out the Otters once again.
Humboldt had 10 hits in the game, including a solo home run by
Nancy Harbeson.
Tracy Motzny improved to 7-2 on the season, striking out four and scattering four hits in six innings of work. Hannah Mullen-Jones pitched the final inning and did not allow a runner on base.
The Lumberjacks and Otters will face off in another CCAA-counting twinbill Monday beginning at noon on the HSU Softball Field.
