ARCATA — (March 16) Humboldt State's softball team earned its fifth and sixth straight wins Friday with 3-1 and 6-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victories over visiting Sonoma State.
The Lumberjacks improve to 20-3 overall and 11-1 in CCAA play. The Seawolves fall to 13-17 overall and 5-11 in the CCAA.
In the opener,
Lizzy Prescott tossed a two-hitter and fanned nine Seawolves, improving her record to 11-1.
Offensively, the Jacks got a pair of hits from
Megan Sutherland and one hit each by Cailtin, Klug,
Natalie Galletly and
Chrissy Motzny.
In the bottom of the first, Galletly scored on an error by Sonoma State's shortstop, giving the Jacks a 1-0 lead. Humboldt added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer over the centerfield fence by Klug.
Alex Winters knocked a solo shot to left-center, accounting for the Seawolves' lone run of the game.
In the nightcap,
Carolyn Cameron led off the bottom of the first with a double, then scored on a single by Klug to put HSU up 1-0.
The Jacks then exploded for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 advantage. Humboldt added one more insurance run in the bottom of the forth for the 6-0 final.
Cameron, Klug and
Nancy Harbeson each had a pair of hits while West drove in two runs.
Tracy Motzny (9-2) pitched six innings, striking out four and scattering four hits. Hannah Mullen-Jones pitched the final inning for Humboldt, recording one strikeout.
The Lumberjacks host Sonoma State and Western Oregon Saturday and Sunday in the Al Cooper Tournament. Humboldt takes to the field at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
