ARCATA — (March 17) Natalie Galletly knocked a pair of home runs over the center field fence, leading Humboldt State to a 9-3 win over Western Oregon in the opening game of the Al Cooper Softball Tournament Saturday. In the second game of the day, the Lumberjacks claimed victory over Sonoma State for a third straight time, recording a 7-1 final.

Carolyn Cameron led off the day with a double and Caitlin Klug followed with a single before Galletly sent a long ball over the fence for a 3-0 Lumberjack lead. Marissa Slattery had an RBI double later in the inning to give Humboldt four first-inning runs.

The Jacks added three runs in the second, two on a single by Megan Sutherland and one on a single by Slattery, and two more in the third on Galletly's second homer to take a 9-0 advantage.

After relief pitcher Hannah Mullen-Jones game up a two-run home run to the Wolves' Melissa Wilson, HSU's starting pitcher Lizzy Prescott reentered the game and preserved her 12th victory of the year.

Prescott recorded six strikeouts while giving up just two hits and no earned runs.

Klug, Sutherland and Slattery finished the game with three hits apiece while Galletly tallied five RBI.

Against Sonoma State, a shutout-win was spoiled with a solo home run by Melissa Calvin in the top of the seventh, but the Jacks retired the final two batters with a line out and strikeout to end the game.

Tracy Motzny (10-2) went the full seven innings for Humboldt, striking out three and scattering five hits.

Cameron had a pair of doubles and an RBI while Sutherland added a 2RBI triple to lead the Jacks' offense.

Humboldt, now 22-3 overall, takes to the field at 1 p.m. against Sonoma State and 3 p.m. against Western Oregon on Sunday in the final games of the Al Cooper Tournament.
