Late rally lifts Jacks past Seawolves in tourney finale

ARCATA — (March 18) Down 3-0 to Sonoma State after the first inning, Humboldt State's softball team scored single runs in the third and forth innings, then tallied two more in the top of the seventh to earn a 4-3 win over the Seawolves in the final game of the Al Cooper Tournament Sunday in Arcata. In the Jacks' earlier game, four different players tallied a pair of hits as HSU claimed a 9-1, six-inning victory over Western Oregon.

Humboldt went a perfect 4-0 on its way to being named the tournament champions. The Lumberjacks are now 24-3 on the season and have won 10 straight games.   

Against Western Oregon, the Lumberjacks scored one run in the first when Megan Sutherland's single sent leadoff Carolyn Cameron across the plate.

In the second inning, sacrifice flies by Nancy Harbeson and Natalie Galletly accounted for a pair of runs while Cameron added an RBI single. Humboldt added two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, taking a 9-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth.

Melissa Wilson broke the Jacks' shutout in the bottom of the sixth, knocking a solo home run over the center field fence, but pitcher Tracy Motzny (11-2) retired the final two batters with a strikeout and ground out to end the ball game.

Motzny finished with five strikeouts to go along with four hits and one earned run.

In the nightcap, Claire Hiney led off with a home run and the Seawolves added two more runs on a Lumberjack error to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Humboldt scored single runs in the third and forth to get within one of SSU, then rallied for two more in the top of the seventh. Marissa Slattery led off the inning with a shot long over the center field fence to tie the game 3-3. Then, with two outs, Cameron beat out a hit to the shortstop and stole second before Caitlin Klug blasted a triple down the right field line, sending Cameron across the plate for the go-ahead run.

Playing as the home team in the contest, Sonoma State got one final at-bat, but pitcher Lizzy Prescott force three straight fly balls as the Jacks held on for the 4-3 win.

Prescott (13-1) finished the game with eight strikeouts while scattering four hits and allowing one earned run.

Klug went 3-for-3 with the crucial RBI while Cameron added a pair of hits and a pair or runs.

Humboldt State returns to California Collegiate Athletic Association play later this week, traveling to face Chico State in a four-game series.
