CHICO — (March 24) Lizzy Prescott threw a one-hitter in the opening game and Humboldt State's defense held Chico State to a single run in the nightcap as the Lumberjacks claimed 2-0 and 4-1 wins over the Wildcats in California Collegiate Athletic Association softball action Saturday.

The Lumberjacks improve to 26-3 overall and 13-1 in the CCAA. The Wildcats fall to 9-19 overall and 5-15 in league play.

Prescott improved to 14-1 on the season with the complete-game shutout. She fanned six batters and walked one while allowing the single hit.

Humboldt tallied seven hits, but were only able to push runners across the plate in the sixth inning. Natalie Galletly led off the inning with a walk and Megan Sutherland reached on an error by the third baseman.

A sacrifice bunt by Francesca West moved Sutherland and pinch runner Stefanie Singh to second and third, respectively, before a single by Marissa Slattery plated Singh. Sutherland then scored on a single by pinch hitter Ashley Oltjenbruns to give HSU the 2-0 win.

In the nightcap, Slattery drove in a pair of runs and the Lumberjacks capitalized on four Wildcat errors to score their four runs.

Carolyn Cameron and Slattery each had a pair of hits to lead HSU's offense while Tracy Motzny picked up her 12th win of the year in the pitching circle.

Motzny went 5.2 innings before giving up Chico State's lone run in the sixth inning. Prescott came in to pitch the final 1.1 innings, striking out one and allowing just one hit.

“We hit the ball better in the second game than in the first,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “(Chico) held Galletly in check and the wind kept a couple of balls in the park, but Slattery and Oltjenbruns came through with key hits.”

Humboldt State and Chico State face off Sunday at 11 a.m. for the second twinbill of the four-game series.
