Humboldt State claims TOC title

TURLOCK — (April 1) Lizzy Prescott recorded six strikeouts and allowed just three hits as Humboldt State's softball team claimed the 2007 Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno title with a 2-0 win over Cal State Stanislaus Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the Lumberjacks earned a 2-1, 12-inning win over Hawaii Pacific and a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Sonoma State to advance to the championship game against the Warriors.

Prescott, the tournament's most valuable player, earned all three Lumberjack wins on Sunday, improving her season record to 21-1. She pitched 20.2 total innings in the three games, striking out a combined 19 batters while allowing just eight hits and three walks.

Also named to the all-tournament team from Humboldt State were first baseman Natalie Galletly, right fielder Chrissy Motzny and catcher Marissa Slattery.

Against Hawaii Pacific, the Jacks scored their first run in the top of the second when Motzny singled to left, advanced to second on an error by the left fielder and scored on a single to center by Nancy Harbeson.

The Sea Warriors evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with a walk and an RBI double. Neither team could push another run across the plate by the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings and the use of the international tie breaker.

Finally, in the bottom of the 12th, Carolyn Cameron's single scored Harbeson, and the Jacks' defense held HPU scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

After going down 3-2 to Sonoma State in the semifinal game, Humboldt pushed two unearned runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth for the 4-3 win.

In the championship game, Megan Sutherland led off the third with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Cameron. Caitlin Klug then advanced Cameron to third on a sacrifice bunt and Galletly's sacrifice fly to left field sent Cameron home for the 2-0 advantage.

The Lumberjacks then rode the arm of Prescott the rest of the way to claim their second straight TOC title.

“Lizzy was a workhorse today,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “It was a great win for us and there is no question now who is the number one team in the West.”

Humboldt State returns to California Collegiate Athletic Association play this week, traveling to La Jolla for a pair of doubleheaders against UC San Diego.
