Prescott records perfect game in HSU split

ARCATA — (April 14) Junior pitcher Lizzy Prescott recorded her first collegiate perfect game as the Lumberjacks claimed a 5-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield in California Collegiate Athletic Association softball action Saturday in Arcata. The Roadrunners avoided a series sweep, however, earning a 4-2, eight-inning win in the nightcap.

Humboldt State moved to 43-6 overall and 21-3 in the CCAA while the Roadrunners are now 27-20-1 overall and 19-12 in league play.

Prescott tallied four strikeouts in the opener and the Lumberjack defense retired the remaining 17 Roadrunner batters to preserve the perfect game. It was the first-ever perfect game to be pitched against CSUB while the team had not been held without a hit in a seven-inning game since 1991.

Offensively, Humboldt used a big third inning, scoring four runs on three hits, then added one more run in the fourth. Nancy Harbeson scored on a sacrifice fly by Natalie Galletly and Chrissy Motzny knocked a 3RBI single down the right field line to account for the third-inning runs. In the bottom of the fourth, pitch hitter Vanessa Shernock blasted her fourth home run of the year over the center field fence, giving HSU the 5-0 cushion.

Cal State Bakersfield connected to Humboldt State pitcher Tracy Motzny early in game two, scoring runs in the second and third innings on a solo home run by Hilary Taylor and an RBI-double by Carrie Hilvers.

The Jacks scored a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single by Caitlin Klug. Galletly then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, smacking her 10th home run of the season.

In the top of the eighth, the Roadrunners struck again, this time with a two-run home run by Kelli Bailey.

Humboldt got runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth, but a two straight fly outs, including a near-diving catch by CSUB shortstop Kianna Urbanski, ended the game.

Prescott (24-3) pitched the final 5.1 innings, giving up four hits, including the game-winning home run.

The Lumberjacks, who clinched a berth in the CCAA Championship Softball Tournament Friday, have a pair of four-game series remaining in conference play, beginning this week at San Francisco State. Humboldt will then close out the regular-season in Arcata against Cal State Stanislaus.
