SAN FRANCISCO — (April 21) Shutting down San Francisco State's usually high-powered offense, Humboldt State's softball team claimed 4-0 and 8-0 wins over the Gators in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday in San Francisco.

The Lumberjacks improve to 45-6 overall and 23-3 in the CCAA. The Gators, who are still fighting for a spot in the four-team CCAA championship tournament, fall to 28-29 overall and 17-15 in league play.

Pitchers Lizzy Prescott (26-3) and Tracy Motzny (19-2) each allowed just three hits to the Gators as they both added complete-game shutouts to their records. In the first game, Prescott fanned eight batters while Motzny had one in he six-inning nightcap.

The Jacks jumped on the board early in both games, scoring runs in the first, third and sixth innings of the opener. Caitlin Klug had an RBI single and Francesca West drove in a pair of runs, while the fourth run came due to a SFSU fielding error.

In the second inning of the nightcap, RBI singles by Carolyn Cameron and Natalie Galletly, and an RBI walk by Klug gave HSU an early 3-0 lead. Humboldt then added two more runs in the top of the fifth and three more in the top of the sixth to force the eight-run mercy rule finish.

Galletly and Megan Sutherland each had a pair of hits in the win while Marissa Slattery drove in two runs and five other Jacks recorded RBI hits.

“Galletly had a great day, our defense was very good and both of our pitchers were on,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek.

The Lumberjacks and Gators face off in another pair of games Sunday at 11 a.m., then close out the regular-season in Arcata next week against Cal State Stanislaus.
