ARCATA — (April 29)
Megan Sutherland blasted a grand slam early in game one and Marissa Slatttery and
Natalie Galletly came through late in game two as Humboldt State's softball team completed a California Collegiate Athletic Association four-game sweep of No 1 regionally ranked Cal State Stanislaus with 9-5 and 4-3 wins on Sunday in Arcata.
The No. 2 regionally ranked Lumberjacks improve to 51-6 overall and 29-3 in the CCAA while the Warriors fall to 43-15 overall and 23-13 in league play.
In the opener, Humboldt jumped on the Warriors' starting pitcher Omaira Estremera as two walks and a single loaded the bases for Sutherland to send a two-out, first-pitch grand slam over the center field fence.
While the Jacks added two runs in the second and one each in the third, fourth and fifth, the Warriors' offense also came alive after managing just two hits in a pair of games on Saturday. Sarah Shamblin, Meghan Franksen and Casey Stephenson all tallied solo home runs off of HSU ace
Lizzy Prescott as the Warriors totaled 10 hits and five runs in the first five innings.
Prescott, who earned the win while recording seven strikeouts, was replaced by
Tracy Motzny in the sixth inning. Motzny cooled Cal State Stanislaus' hot bats, not allowing a run in the final two innings.
Not to be deterred after dropping three straight to the Lumberjacks, the Warriors took a 3-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap.
Humboldt got one run back in the third when
Caitlin Klug's single to right-center scored pinch runner
Felicia Miranda.
Marissa Slattery then came up with the clutch hit in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game with a one-out two-run home run over the left field fence.
After giving up a single to the Warriors' leadoff Jennifer Arnold in the top of the seventh, Humboldt's defense recorded three straight outs, giving itself the final regulation at-bat.
Two straight dropped balls at first base allowed
Carolyn Cameron and Klug to reach base, setting up Galletly's RBI single to right-center and giving Humboldt State the come-from-behind victory.
Galletly and Slattery each tallied a pair of hits in the game while
Tracy Motzny picked up her 100th career victory in the circle. She scattered five hits and struck out three to improve to 22-2 on the season.
Humboldt State will host the CCAA Championship Tournament next Thursday through Sunday on the HSU Softball Field. Cal State Stanislaus and UC San Diego will meet to open tournament play at 1 p.m. Thursday followed by the Lumberjacks and San Francisco State at 3:30 p.m.
