TURLOCK — (May 12) Humboldt State's softball team staved off elimination once again, earning a 2-0 win over UC San Diego Saturday morning at the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championship in Turlock. With the win, the Lumberjacks advanced to face Seattle in the last game of the day, but with the Redhawks leading 3-2, the game was called due to darkness and will continue Sunday at 10 a.m.
In the early elimination game, an RBI single by
Marissa Slattery and a solo home run by
Nancy Harbeson accounted for the Jacks' two runs while pitcher
Lizzy Prescott fanned a dozen Triton batters in the complete-game victory.
With her sixth strikeout of the game, Prescott set a new HSU career record for strikeouts, breaking the old record of 738, set by Jessame Kendall.
Humboldt put a run on the board early, as
Carolyn Cameron led off the bottom of the first with a single down the left field line. Cameron then advanced to second on a
Caitlin Klug bunt to third on a ground out by
Natalie Galletly and crossed home plate on the single to left field by Slattery.
Harbeson added her fifth home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out shot over the left field fence.
Along with her 12 strikeouts, Prescott scattered just four hits and walked one, improving to 33-4 on the season.
The winner of Humboldt's game against Seattle will advance to face Hawaii-Hilo at noon Sunday while the loser will be eliminated from tournament play.
