TURLOCK — (May 13) For a fourth straight year Humboldt State entered the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championship as the No. 1 seed, but could not advance out of the region, this time falling 4-2 to Seattle Sunday in Turlock. Humboldt closes out the 2007 season with a 56-8 overall record.
The Lumberjacks jumped on Seattle's freshman pitcher Kelsey Reynolds early, and took advantage of a pair of Redhawk errors to score one run in the first and one in the third.
Caitlin Klug reached first twice by error and was batted in each time, once by
Marissa Slattery and once by
Megan Sutherland.
Not to be outdone, Seattle would score three runs on two hits and one Lumberjack error, all in the bottom of the first inning, off of starter
Tracy Motzny.
Lizzy Prescott replaced Motzny in the first and recorded five strikeouts before play was called after three innings due to darkness.
When play resumed Sunday morning Seattle struck again, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth on a double to the center field fence by Heather Hansen.
Humboldt had one final chance in top of the seventh, but despite a base hit by
Carolyn Cameron, no other Lumberjack was able to get on base and the Redhawks held on for the 4-2 win.
Prescott had 10 strikeouts in the game, bringing her season total to a new HSU record of 285. Motzny took the loss for the Jacks, finished the season with a 23-3 record.
