ARCATA — (May 3)
Francesca West's walk-off grand slam finally ended Game 2 at the CCAA Softball Tournament, lifting Humboldt State to a 11-3 win over San Francisco State in the continuation of a game that was suspended Thursday because of rain.
Starting the morning with a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Humboldt State celebrated the sunny skies with six runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the mercy-rule shortened victory. San Francisco State scored first on Karolyn Gubine's solo homer in the top of the inning, but it wasn't enough to keep HSU from advancing into the 1 p.m. winner's bracket game against Cal State Stanislaus.
Lizzy Presscott improved to 30-3 for the Jacks, who are now 52-6 on the season. Presscott allowed three runs in five innings of work, walking one and striking out six Gators.
Vanessa Truan suffered the loss for S.F. State, and was charged with nine earned runs. The final blow was delivered against relief pitcher Kristine Beristianos, who had just entered the game.
San Francisco State twice led the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Vanessa Rodrigue, a sacrifice and throwing error. After HSU countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning, the Gators moved ahead again on solo homer run by Elissa Reizman in the second.
Marissa Slattery's two-run home run in the second inning gave Humboldt State a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
San Francisco State remains alive in the tournament, moving into the 10:30 a.m. elimination game against UC San Diego.
