ARCATA – (Sept. 14)
Zlatan Sahmanovic's free kick from just outside the box in the 107th minute captured a 1-0 win for the HSU men's soccer team over Chico State on Friday.
The Lumberjacks improved to 4-3-0 and 1-1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association games, while Chico State fell to 3-5-0 and 1-2-0 in the CCAA.
“As soon as I saw it come off his foot I knew it was in,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “It was a great goal and capped of a much deserved win.”
Zahmanovic was fouled from behind, providing the opportunity in the second overtime. His left-footed shot curled above and around the wall, finding the upper right corner of the net.
The Wildcats out shot the Jacks 17-8, but HSU keeper
Drew Ryan had to only handle seven of them to complete the shutout.
“We came out with a great strategy on defense,” said Cumbo. “We made a few tactical changes and won the long balls in the air that we needed to win.”
The Lumberjacks return to the HSU Soccer Field on Sunday to face Cal State Stanislaus. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
