ARCATA – (Sept. 16) Numerous squandered opportunities in the second half could not find the back of the net as Cal State Stanislaus defeat the Humboldt State men's soccer team 1-0 on Sunday in Arcata.
The Lumberjacks fall to 4-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Warriors improve to 2-4-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the CCAA.
“We had all the opportunities we needed to win,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We beat them in every statistical category except for the final score.”
Alfredo Renteria's header off of a corner in the second minute was the only goal in the game. Thomas Janz was credited with the assist on the goal.
The Lumberjacks out shot the Warriors 14-3 in the second period, but just four of them were on goal.
“(Cal State Stanislaus) decided to pretty much just sit on their lead for the next 88 minutes,” said Cumbo of the Warriors' play following the early score.
The Lumberjacks go back on the road next weekend for a pair of CCAA matches against CSU Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
