SEASIDE — (Sept. 21) Missed opportunities and lack of execution led Humboldt State to a 3-1 loss to CSU Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Friday.

The Lumberjacks fall to 4-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the CCAA while the Otters improve to 2-1-2 on the season.

Humboldt got off to a strong start, earning a free kick just outside the goal box just three minutes into the game, but a failure to capitalize would be a preview of the ensuing 87 minutes of play.

The Otters found the back of the net at the 40-minute mark when Nate Toricelli's cross from the endline wound up at the feet of Kyle Millerick who buried the ball in the Jacks' goal.

Roland Demombynes tied the game in the 52nd minute of play when he received a through-ball and beat CSUMB's keeper, Brendan Baca, for his fourth goal of the season.

Just 80 seconds later, HSU's Doug Simpson tackled an Otter forward from behind in the box, giving CSUMB a penalty kick opportunity. Kyle Satow made good on the PK, giving the home team a 2-1 advantage.

As Humboldt pushed forward, trying to net the tying score, Andy Binol was able to secure a two-goal lead for the Otters, scoring a goal assisted by Satow.

“We need to be more disciplined and make better decisions,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We're lacking leadership and prescence right now. We still haven't come together as a team.”

Drew Ryan had eight saves in goal for HSU while Baca stopped seven of the Jacks' 22 shots.

Humboldt will look to get back on track Sunday with a CCAA match up against San Francisco State. Kick off in San Francisco is set for 12:30 p.m.
