Womens soccer cant convert in 1-0 loss

SEASIDE — (Sept. 21) Despite an 18-12 shot advantage, including a 14-6 spread in the first half, Humboldt State's women's soccer team was held scoreless for a second straight outing, falling 1-0 to CSU Monterey Bay Friday.

The Lumberjacks drop to 3-5-2 overall and 1-3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while the Otters improve to 1-4-0 overall and in league play.

“We had possession for the majority of the game and at least six excellent scoring opportunities on the first half, we just couldn't close the deal,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo.

The lone goal of the game came just four minutes into the second half when CSU Monterey Bay was awarded a free kick just inside the midfield line. After Humboldt State's defense was unable to clear the ball out of the box, the Otters' Cheri Schwanke found the ball at her feet and slotted it into the net from eight yards out.

The Lumberjacks forced the Otters' Catrina Miramontes to collect 14 saves in the game, but none of their shots would find the back of the net.

Only a pair of CSU Monterey Bay's dozen shots were on goal as the Otters rarely threatened offensively.

“We didn't give (the Otters) much, but they took advantage when we did,” said Cumbo.

Humboldt will look to get back on track Sunday with a CCAA match up against San Francisco State. Kick off in San Francisco is set for 3 p.m.
