CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Jacks rally for 3-2 win against Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK — (Sept. 21) A balanced attack featuring four Lumberjacks with double-digit kills led Humboldt State to a come-from-behind 17-30, 30-25, 25-30, 32-30, 15-10 win over Sonoma State Friday in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action.

With their first-ever CCAA road victory, the Lumberjacks improve to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in league play while the Seawolves fall to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA.

Humboldt got off to a miserable start in the opening game, hitting .000 with 11 kills and 11 errors, and finally took its first lead of the match at 12-11 midway through the second game.

The Jacks would lead by as many as six points in the second game, then claimed the five-point win on a service ace by Mallory Briney.

“The first game was just bad,” said interim HSU head coach James Kealalio. “The two games we lost were on us, we just didn't take care of the ball.”

The third game was a near repeat of the first as Humboldt trailed 9-1 early on and could not come all the way back, falling 30-25.

After gutting out a 32-30 win in the fourth game, the Jacks broke a 10-10 tie in the deciding game by scoring the final five points of the match, capped off by an emphatic kill by Lynsey Adams.

Adams finished the match with a team-high 17 kills while also contributing 17 digs. Briney and Danielle Wells each put down a dozen kills and Olivia Solomon chipped in 11. Briney was also big at the net, collecting three solo blocks and four block assists while Wells had one solo block and three assists.

“This was a good win for us,” said Kealalio. “We had a lot going on off the court this week and the team really needed this win.”

Humboldt State was without the services of senior outside hitter Katie Norkunas, who quit the team for personal reasons earlier this week.

The Lumberjacks will look for a second straight road victory Saturday when they travel to CSU Monterey Bay for a 7 p.m. match in Seaside.
