CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Humboldt State falls 3-1 to Otters

SEASIDE — (Sept. 22) Another stellar performance from junior outside hitter Lynsey Adams was not  enough to lead Humboldt State's volleyball team to a second straight victory as the Lumberjacks fell 27-30, 33-31, 20-30, 23-30, 23-30 to CSU Monterey Bay Saturday.

The Lumberjacks fall to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while the Otters improve to 5-11 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Adams, playing on the left side for the first time this weekend, led Humboldt State with 16 kills while Mallory Briney and Megahn Berndt chipped in 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Danielle Wells led all players with seven blocks, including two solos.

Despite hitting .207 for the match, the Jacks were not quite as efficient as the Otters who hit .274 and had three players reach double-digit kills.

The Lumberjacks never trailed by more than four points in the first game, but after allowing a 21-21 tie to turn into a 24-21 Otter advantage, HSU was never able to recover, falling 30-27.

In the second game, back-to-back blocks by Danielle Wells and Olivia Solomon gave the Lumberjacks the 33-31 win, but a 9-1 deficit to begin the third game was too much to recover from as they fell 30-20.

Humboldt rallied late in the fourth game, scoring seven straight points to come within two at 25-23, but five straight points by the Otters ended the Jacks' hopes of pushing for a fifth game.

Brittney Etchings and Courtney Taubert were the force that led the Otters, collecting 20 kills apiece.

The Lumberjacks are back on the road this week, first taking on Cal State Los Angeles at 7 p.m. Friday.
