Ashdown nets a pair, Jacks fall in OT

SAN FRANCISCO — (Sept. 23) Shanna Vatchel's goal seven minutes into the first 10-minute sudden death overtime period gave San Francisco State a 4-3 win over Humboldt State's women's soccer team Sunday.

The Lumberjacks fall to 3-6-2 overall and 1-4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while the Gators improve to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play.

Following a quiet 1-1 tie through the first 45 minutes of play, four goals were scored in an eight-minute span late in the second half, forcing the “golden goal” overtime.

Erin Ashdown scored the first of her two goals at the 8:53 mark of the game, giving Humboldt State an early 1-0 lead. Allison Lawrence earned the assist on the goal after her blocked shot came back out for Ashdown to strike into the net.

“Erin had an excellent game,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo of the junior midfielder. “She stepped up when the team needed her.”

With 15 seconds remaining in the first half, Jane Campbell's header off of a pass from Myriah Johnson evened the score at 1-1 headed into the break.

It wouldn't be until the 75th minute of play before either team would score again, but at that point, the two teams traded goals over the ensuing eight minutes to take a 3-3 tie into overtime.

Whitney Downes made it 2-1 in favor of the Gators before Ashdown tallied her second goal of the game, this time off of an assist by Kelsey Gomula.

Vatchel netted her first goal of the game at the 82:22 mark, giving the lead back to SFSU, but just 14 seconds later, HSU's Kim Carroll tallied her third goal of the season to knot the score at three.

At the 97:08 mark in overtime, San Francisco State made good on its third shot attempt as Vatchel volleyed in a loose ball that had been sent into the box by Morgan Davidson.

“Overall this was one of our better games and I'm happy with the way we played, so it's unfortunate that we couldn't come away with the win,” said Cumbo.

Along with Ashdown's play up front, Cumbo also credited freshmen LeAnna Dahl, Ashten Melton and Tamlyn Tsubota for turning in strong performances in the back line.

San Francisco State led the Lumberjacks with an 18-9 shot advantage. HSU's keepers Allyson Riggs and Chandra Gaskalla combined for five saves while Gators' keeper Emily Hart had one save.

Humboldt State is on the road again next week, traveling to face CSU San Bernardino on Friday and Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.
