Haden's header leads Jacks past Seasiders

ARCATA – (Sept. 25) Tim Haden's header in the 78th on a free kick by Jon Eseman led Humboldt State's men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting BYU-Hawaii in a non-league match-up Tuesday.

Both teams' overall records now stand at 5-6-0.

Eseman added a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining to put the Jacks up two.

“Tim was the man of the match today for us,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “He got his head on the free kick for the first goal and he created the opportunity for the penalty kick.”

The Jacks held possession of the ball throughout the game, holding BYU-Hawaii to just three shots on goal in the game while generating 19 shots of their own, nine on goal.

“We stuck to our objectives and put together an entire 90-minute match,” said Cumbo. “I was also happy that a number of players who haven't seen the field much stepped up and made the most of their opportunity.”

Sophomore Ryan Romero started in goal for the Jacks, making two saves in the first half. Freshman David Bussen took over in the second half and recorded one save.

“Our keepers played well today,” said Cumbo. “Ryan and Dave deserved the combined shutout.”

The Jacks head back on the road Friday, continuing California Collegiate Athletic Association play against Cal State San Bernardino. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
