CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Jacks' attack unable to connect in 2-0 loss

SAN BERNARDINO – Despite possessing the ball a significant amount of the game, Humboldt State was unable to put away any goals in a 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer loss to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.

The loss dropped HSU to 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA while CSUSB improved its record to 3-7-2 and 1-4-2. The Lumberjacks will try to regroup in time for Sunday's road game at Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State San Bernardino gained the lead only five and a half minutes into the game when Daniel Rodriguez scored on a breakaway off an assist from Obi Agwu. Thinking an offisides had occurred, HSU's defense allowed Rodriguez through to set up an easy one-on-one attempt against Lumberjack freshman goalkeeper Dave Bussen.

"It was a through ball that our guys thought was offsides, and just stopped playing," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "That left our keeper hung out to dry. Dave (Bussen) had a very solid overall performance in goal today, and did the best he could in a tough situations."

Bussen finished with seven saves while Coyotes' keeper Lucas Pepi made five.

Humboldt State gained several possessions and controlled the ball well throughout the 90 minutes, but missed several good opportunities. In a late attempt for the equalizing goal the Jacks sent all of their players forward on the attack, allowing CSUSB's Lorenzo Loson to add the other goal with only four seconds remaining.

"This is another missed opportunity for a league win," Cumbo said. "I can't accept the fact that we lose games like this, and we'll address it before Sunday. We'll make some tactical changes and keep trying our best to fix it and get back in the win column."
