SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State San Bernardino managed an early goal and held on for 62 more minutes to claim a 1-0 victory over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday.
Humboldt State is now 3-7-2 overall and 1-5-0 in the CCAA heading into Sunday's game at Cal Poly Pomona. The win improved CSUB's overall record to 4-5-2 and league record to 1-5-1, and was the Coyotes' first CCAA win since the 2005 season.
Coyotes' freshman Katie Liby was the only player to dent the net Friday, sending a low volley that deflected off an HSU defender inside the far post and past HSU keeper Michaela Hernandez. The goal was Liby's team-leading fourth of the season, with an assist credited to Megan Monahan.
"We had a defensive lapse, they broke through, and the shot actually went in off the deflection," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "Our keeper actually had it covered correctly, but it was misdirected into the goal."
The Lumberjacks managed four shots on goal and had numerous other opportunities, but were outshot overall, 13-7 by the Coyotes. Hernandez, in her first collegiate start, kept the score tight with five saves while CSUB keeper Leslie Rhodes made four in recording her third shutout of the season.
"Michaela (Hernandez) had a very strong performance in goal today," Cumbo said. "It's unfortunate the way the game went and the way the goal was scored."
